The board meeting focused on a worksession regarding a proposed CTE partnership and the construction of a new elementary school to replace the aging Foster Park and Monarch facilities. Key discussions included the financial projections for a penny sales tax referendum, site selection considerations prioritizing the Foster Park location due to logistical advantages during construction, and the potential development of a new Career and Technology Education (CTE) Center in collaboration with Spartanburg Community College. Concerns were raised regarding the contingency of the CTE project on partnership funding and the need for assurance for taxpayers.
The Board reviewed long-term capital project planning and potential sales tax referendum revenue projections. Discussions focused on the condition and age of current school facilities, including Foster Park Elementary and Monarch Elementary. The Board evaluated three project pathways concerning renovations versus new construction and ultimately passed a motion to explore a Career and Technology Education partnership pathway combined with the construction of a new elementary school.
The board discussed several operational and administrative topics, including an update on the start of the school year, literacy instruction initiatives, and early college partnerships. The superintendent highlighted accomplishments in cafeteria services, provided an update on the upcoming sales tax referendum, and presented an enrollment report for the 2026-2027 school year. The board also addressed personnel and legal matters in executive session, approved several overnight field trips, selected legislative conference delegates, conducted a first reading of a policy, and reviewed the athletic department budget and operations, including potential incentives for coaches with CDL licenses.
